WOW, dont think I have ever seen a factory barrel look like that, it really stands out.

Most of the regular production Auto Mag barrels are shades of gray, not black.

Amazing work.

Thanks George .....some of us may not like it but just my own take on things & after seeing some Pasadena & TDE units with very dark label stencils like Jeffrey Kelley I seem to really like the darker look Beer

Not sure if we are looking at the same guns or not, but your work looks much darker than the others. Not just darker, but there is some additional tonal quality you have added that brings out a super strong contrast that is almost like gloss black paint.

Its really quite stunning.

Bet it would look great on a polished barrel.

Kudos!

Maybe the gloss that you are seeing could be the light oil coating I put on.

Thank you Andy, making those cuts in the clear tape is tedious work through the microscope.

This is fantastic!  Please explain the process for us that have no clue how you performed this.  Products, materials etc.

Hello Bill,

Thank you
I'm using Caswell Stainless Steel Blackening ( liquid ) , the jell might be a lot less messy but you must be very careful anyway.
First thing you need to do is thoroughly clean the surface with alcohol.
Next I used clear Industrial tape 2.0 Mil thick , I've also used Clear Scotch tape seems to work just as well.
You will also need some new long small pointed X Acto blades, the best ones are # H-998 or you can
use some other similar blades same point but must be new.
You'll be cutting very carefully as not to use too must pressure & end up cutting into the steel, this will be permanently there for ever & you don't want that !
Also very small pin pointed tweezers come in handy.
For applying the stainless steel blackening liquid I've used the same X Acto blades or you can use a smaller blade like the one in the photo here.
Oh you'll need lots of Q tips, you don't want to leave this blackening liquid on for more then 1 minute, this will begin to rust the steel.
You can use the Q tips to soak up the liquid while it's still wet , if it begins to dry just apply a little
more & soak that up but only DAB the Q tip on top of the area that is cut out, if you slide the Q tip
across the text or any other area you might move the tape this will destroy the cut out & surly get
blacking liquid on the wrong area.
You'll be able to apply several coats to get the desired darkening.
After you have your desired look you'll need to naturalize the surface , I used baking soda mixed with  little water. you'll be using a very little over the treated area.
To take off the tape I used a new long X acto blade carefully across the surface.
This is all done under a microscope, I got this one on Ebay for about $65.00

Let me just say one thing..........This is no easy task ! I never want to do this again Wacko

Here's a little more uniform image that shows some flaws.
The tape should be one piece & not separated areas.... Disapprove

Embarrassed Thank you Benny123 but this was very hard on my back & shoulders not to mention looking through
the microscope for hours on end........one slip of the blade & the barrel is ruined with a permanent
slice in the steel.
I do have an etch-o-matic sys. & have been working on text & logos but yet to try it.

Simply brilliant!!!  I know you said you don't want to do it again, but I think you might have a side business refurbishing this on barrels.  Thanks for filling me in on the process.  Not sure I'm willing to take it on just yet.

Hi Bill,
Thank you & your very welcome.
When I get some I still need to clean up some areas that have some bleed over of the darkening.

Good!

Are your recoil rods tight?  It could just be that the barrel is not on the gun.

The bolt looks plated or something, is it?

Hi Bob,

The lower came with those  rods , .186 I think but they are in all the way.
I've been upgrading a few things , the firing pin to the new Titanium, new Wolff recoil springs, but the
.200 rods do not fit even with the right size springs.
The rear holes nearest the cocking piece are smaller of cores, I still need to take some measurements so I'll things as is for now but would like to investigate this further .......
The bolt is very clean no other coatings.

Your right Bob, once the barrel is mounted the recoil rods sit flush, the images load fast !
