Based on Tony’s insider knowledge, I contacted Magnum Research via email a few weeks ago. They had 50 AE and 44 magnum 10” barrels in stock. I ordered a 50 AE barrel (shown below) and they said they would call me when the 429 DE 10” barrels came in. I received the 50 AE barrel and have had it to the range once. Excellent accuracy. I only had some moderate loads with AA#9 to test and MV exceeded published data for a 6” barrel. I need to test full house W296 loads next. Will report back.

I got a call from Jeff at MR today. They ordered 100 of the 10” 429 DE barrels and they received the first shipment of 25 today. Only 3 are spoken for (including the one I ordered), so there are 22 up for grabs. They still have 50 and 44 barrels in stock. The 50 AE barrel is $827 and the 429 barrel is $799. Shipping is $15.  They offer a threading service but it requires the barrel to be cut back to 7”, so I passed. You have to specify the thread pitch. The cost is $225 extra for the threaded version.

The 10” barrels aren’t on the MR website, so you have to call to order. Matt and Jeff are manning the phones: 218-746-4597. I left a message and they called back quickly. Order soon, if you want one.

Thanks Tony!

I got out today and tested the 10” 50 AE barrel today vs the 6” compensated barrel (5” of rifling). I did a ladder but the best results were at the max load. 40° F at 5,000 feet.

Hornady 300 gr XTP COL 1.58 CCI 350 Win296 34.5 gr (max load)

6” compensated barrel: 1,370 fps
10” barrel: 1620 fps

I basically got an extra 50 fps per extra inch of rifled barrel. Very accurate and not punishing to shoot. Pretty flat shooting to 100 yards when zeroed 1 1/4” high at 50 yards. The only downside is that the rumors about ejected cases coming straight back at you is no joke. A couple of cases dinged me in the forehead.  It seemed like it was a bigger problem when the gun was resting on sandbags than when shot off-hand.  Shooting glasses are a must.

I got a call that my 429 barrel shipped today. I can’t wait to see how it performs.

If your 429 is anything like my barrel you will have 2 that the cases come straight back at you.
When you are up to your neck in alligators it is hard to remember your original intention was to drain the swamp

FYI, the bullets I was shooting I got off Midway. They are bulk factory second bullets that are unlabeled but appear to be Hornady 300 gr XTP’s. At 70¢ per bullet, that’s about a 25% savings over MSRP. I cannot detect any clear defects and the first 100 I ran through the DE functioned perfectly with excellent accuracy.
