Topic: Auto Indexing on Dillon 550BPosted: 22 Apr 2010 at 2:41am |

Recently I had a chance to acquire a Dillon 550B (used, about 15 years old according to the seller) in very reasonable price. Then I started checking what it really is.
By checking the Dillon site, I learned that I can add an auto case feeder. However, they do not mention anything about the auto indexing. Can 550B be an auto indexing with some optional part, or manual indexing only no matter what?
I know some of you have 550B and appreciate your inputs.

Dillon 550,,, I would have guessed you to be a Dillon 1050 guy,,, LOL Actually, I might be the Dillon 1050 guy, man that thing is a MONSTER! Anyone here have one? I have never given a progressive a second look just not interested for whatever reason, but that 1050 is just too cool. I can’t say that I'm serious about a progressive, but if I were in the market for one I don’t think I could settle for anything else after seeing the 1050, it’s just that damn impressive! GH |

GH,
If I ever buy a new press, that would be 1050. The problem on 1050 is its attractive blue color and the size as my reloading bench is in the garage, right front of where my wife parks.
Well this time, it came out from a gararge of someone I know of, and the price was little over $100 after shipping so no reason to think twice, but grab.

The answer to your question is no. It can not be made to auto index.

I agree, but man it would be hard to "settle" for a 550 after seeing that 1050, but then thats like saying you got stuck a Farrari 308 when you wanted the Daytona,,,

I've got a 650 and I can actually get 1,000 rounds an hour off the machine if I'm hauling ass and I have a second person there to keep all the components flowing into the machine non-stop. The 1050 gives you more stations and will swage primer pockets, but I don't believe it will load any faster than a 650.
Someone makes an automatic bullet feeder for the machines, but I have never tried one of those. I saw a demo of it at a show one time, and it seemed to work fine, at least with pistol bullets.

usrguns,
Thank you for the straight answer.
It will then be another "manual" progressive press on my bench.
GH,
I liked my Ferrari 308 so I might like this 550B.
Let's see how strong this blue Kool-Aid is.
Tony, The only rifle caliber I load is 50 Beowulf so pistol bullet only is fine.
But I don't know if like that loud noise from the feeder.
