With all the talk of Starline brass it seems fewer folks are cutting brass down on their own and forming it.  For those who have read much of Lomont and Jurras you also know that properly headspaced cases seriously prolong the life of your gun, that is if you actually shoot it.  That being said, if you do in deed headspace and require a longer than spec length case then the only way to get it to cut down brass.  I for one do this as I like to load and am very particular to the case length, mine being 1.302-1.303". Any shorter than that and I only load it light and let it case form and hopefully grow as I resize for the next loading.  I'll load the 1.303" cases as hot as you want to go and not fear any slam damage possibilities due to a short case in a long chamber.

All that being said to say RCBS is no longer making, even on special order, the replacement reamers for their '.44 AM from .308 brass' trim die sets.  I did confirm with them that they indeed made the reamers in house for many years as the shank diameter is the same as the cut diameter and not an off the shelf reamer.  CH4D sells the ream die and reamer together for $140.00 but will not sell just a reamer separately.  I have two trim die sets that need reamers in order to use them or sell them.  I am currently working with a local tool maker to get costs for having replacement reamers exactly speced to the old RCBS reamers made.

How many folks are like me and like making brass and need a replacement reamer, or just want a spare for that fateful day when your's go dull or gets dropped and breaks?  I'd like to know I'm not just investing for myself and that if priced reasonably I could resell a few to offset the costs.

Please only reply with interest in a reamer.  If you'd like to discuss reloading philosophy please message me directly or start a thread and invite me to comment, be glad to.

Thanks!

What is the actual length of your chamber?

Bob,

1.304" will just let the bolt rotate.  According to Lomont's articles take away .002" from that just rotating number and you're golden.  Once I figured that out I made up the cases to 1.302" and then shot several.  Upon resizing several cases grew a thousandth and I thought I'd try and load and fire those.  They functioned without issue so the really hot loads I use the 1.303" cases now.  I'd load the 1.302" cases hot as well.  Lomont and Jurras both had guns they shot over 20K hot loads through using this method of head spacing and stated they didn't think the frame could be damaged!  They noted individual parts that would wear under those loads as well.  Everything has a service life but if you can prolong it through proper tolerances why not?

I recently purchased a 2nd .44 and after getting it all cleaned up checked the head spacing on that gun as well.  It came in at just rotating at 1.303".  So I'll only load it with 1.302" and below.

I don't know.  That may be a warranty item you could return though.  Worth checking out.

I went ahead and had two reamers made up for the two Trim Die sets I needed them for.  I'll be selling those trim die sets soon as I still have to make the ream collars.

As for the replacement reamers if anyone is interested I can sell them for $100.00 each plus shipping.  They are exact copies of the RCBS ones originally made by RCBS and shipped with the trim die sets.  I opted to leave the square cut off the top of the reamers as I use a cordless drill on the lowest setting to perform the reaming and do not need the tap style connection.  If you want a reamer and desire that tap style connection it can be cut for an additional $30.00.

Let me know if there is any interest.
