Even though I just changed the helicoils, my recoil rods keep shooting loose. I find that after only 8-10 rounds, I have to tighten them anywhere from 1/8 to 1/4 turn, making them as tight as I dare. Surely this can’t be normal? Since the helicoils are brand new, and the locking variety to boot, does this suggest my recoil rods themselves are worn out?

I would say yes.  I am running one of the new guns and I just ran 250 rounds STRAIGHT the other night and I didn't have to tighten my rods at all....but give it another couple of years of shooting and cleaning and I bet I get there.

On my new gun, as you get the threaded portion deeper into the helicoil, the threads get progressively tighter and are nearly locking up/galling on the last turn or two....which is exactly what I want.
