With all this commotion about Brian's next batch of barrels, I think it's high time we had a pooling of knowledge on load data for Auto Mags equipped with barrels longer than the factory standard 6.5" length.
We know that the longer the barrel gets, the more mass it has, and accordingly, I would think, slightly more of a charge of powder needed to get it to cycle properly.

Now we know there are several members out there that already are fortunate to own some of Brian's extra long barrel creations, or maybe they're some of the other fortunate ones who happen to own original long barrels by either Lee Jurras or Kent Lomont.
Either way, surely there's some intrepid reloaders in our midst here on the forum who have developed some reliable loads that work with their longer barrels, like 8.5", 10.5", 12.5", or 16.5", or anything else in between?

Considering that soon there will be more than several of us that will be owning at least the 8.5" VR barrels from Brian, if not other more intriguing lengths, can anyone out there please chime in if you have any wisdom you can impart to the rest of us with regards to what loads you found to work in your own long barreled AMP.?
I imagine there MUST be some slight difference in what works for an 8.5" VR barrel compared to what works for a normal 6.5" VR barrel?  And  on, and on, for the even longer lengths.

If enough people contribute their working recipes to this knowledge base, we might be able to get a general idea of the range of starting points for the different calibers and bullet weights that any of us newbie long barrel owners can use as a staring point for our own load data work-ups and range tests.  And of course any load data that Lee has archived from his own long barrel shooting experiences would be supremely helpful too.

We know that every AMP can be different in it's own recipe requirements, but a decent starting point, from averaging everybody's input on what worked for them could prove useful.

Just throwing this out there for what it's worth.  Hopefully we can get some contributors.

No problem Lee.
Yeah, the PM I sent was just saying that I had re-read  the old 44 Mag Bible, Summer 1979 issue I have, which has an article by you entitled "Barrel Length vs Velocity", but as I was reading to the end of it (which is really just the middle of the article), the silly thing got cut off, just as it was getting interesting. The typesetter or editor cut off your article seemingly half-way through, so I don't know what else you had written.  This last thing written is cut off at page 83, and leaves the reader wondering what happened, wanting to continue the train of thought.  I don't know how they managed to do that.  Obviously proof-reading was not their strong suit before they went to print. Confused
It looks like you were just getting into something really interesting, but I'll never know, it was printed incomplete.  Myron should have fired his proofreader if he had one. LOL

It's a shame, it might have contributed to our long barrel discussion here, and I would have posted it for all to read, but as-is, the article never even gets into what should be the meat of the matter.  Oh well.
Cheers.

Geoff, somewhere I have a copy of the article. I never knew it was incomplete, but I probably read it after it came out. Myron had many magazines he was publishing. I believe his main gal overseeing was Jenny Commander???. Each Mag had its own proofreader. He published more girlie mags than gun mags. The gun mags were his hobby, the girlie mags his money maker, quite a character..

Any updates on a .44 load with Starline brass and one of brians 8.5" barrels? Preferably with a 240 gr bullet.

Use the same data you would use in a 6.5" barrel. The extra 2" of barrel length will just give you a little more velocity.
