I understand that the higher velocity of the .357 AMP is very hard on the standard .357 bullet. Something about the copper being too thin and that the bullet shatters on impact. With that in mind, If I wanted to hunt whitetail with my .357 AMP should I use a specific bullet, or maybe a heavier bullet to do so? Any opinions?

I would stick with Hornady 158 grain XTP's.  I have had excellent results with the feeding reliability of the XTP's and they have a very good reputation with hunters although I have never shot anything with them.

They make both a HP and a FP in the 158 grain XTP.  I would call Hornady and explain what you are shooting them in and give them an approximate velocity and get their recommendation.

I have used the 158 grain XTP with good results too (although I don’t hunt). I have had perfect functioning and outstanding accuracy, although admittedly I’ve only fired 100 or so rounds as my .357 AMP is relatively new to me. It’s the only bullet I have tried.

I have been advised that heavier bullets (say, 180 grains or so) are better, but as I’m not a ballestician and there is no load data available anywhere for anything greater than 158 grains, I have been reluctant to stray from the well-trodden path.

SBR uses the XTP in their .44 Auto Mag ‘factory’ ammo and they claim they will be producing .357 AMP ammo ‘soon’, presumably also using the XTP.

If I were going to try 180 grain bullets, I would shoot them out of the 44 AMP, much higher velocity.

When I used to try to shoot silhouette, notice that I said try, i used some of the 180 grain in 357 mag and max out of a 10" contender.  I certainly was not impressed and went back to the 158's real quick.

I have shot the 158 XTP out of my .357 AMP at some steel targets, and water jugs and there is no doubt that the bullet explodes on impact, but I have never shot a "Soft" target with them. I will give Hornady a call and see what they say. Thanks Gents!!

I stick with bullets about 140gr. Never chrono any loads but easy on the gun.

I have been using the Hornady 140 GR Lever-Evolution bullets.  they are designed for 357 Mag out of a carbine, about the same velocity we get with an Automag, work great so far.  Keep OAL same as you would with a standard bullet.  Feed great, shoot great, very accurate.
When you are up to your neck in alligators it is hard to remember your original intention was to drain the swamp

I have never tried them but for a hunting round that makes a lot of sense to me.

Thanks

I bought some lever-evolution to try. Not done it yet.

I shoot 158 gr JSP Remingtons. I had numerous XTP's shed jackets when shooting 1/2 ply at 25 yards. Enough that made me wonder if they would hold together. They are designed to expand at lower velocities. Others here have not had the problem and it's possible it's just the plywood backer I use.

The deer I shot (thought with a Contender is 357 AMP) was with a 158 gr JSP Remington. It ran a short distance (maybe 75 yards) and that was it.
