Very nice indeed Bruce. 
I definitely like the wood. Hard to tell with the small photo.  Is that maple?

Not a big fan of fluted (or twisted) barrels, but that's just me.  I like big round or flat (octagon) bull barrels, with or without vent ribs, if I had the bucks to get one of these beauties.
Thought of ordering one of these beauts from Max, but it's a bit outside of my snack bracket right now.  ;-D
Looking forward to your article, then I can live or shoot vicariously through you.  ;-)

ps.
Just thought of something.  Seeing as that carbine has a 16" bbl (if I recall Max's specs for that rig correctly), that is a huge piece of reciprocating mass, so maybe fluting/spiraling the barrel reduces the weight somewhat for better cycling?  Curious. As well as cosmetic enhancement is that a reason for it?
