I’ve been using the Hornady XTP 240 grain JHP exclusively since I started shooting Auto Mags a few years ago. Today I was searching the nearby big box chain gun shop for ANY 240 grain 44 bullets, and there were were no conventional bullets to be had. However they did have Berry’s plated flat point bullets available, at $50 for a box of 200:
Normally I would shy away from plated bullets for magnum velocity applications, but these have an advertised speed envelope up to 1850 fps (the corresponding 158gr 357 bullet is only good for 1200 fps, well under 357 AMP capabilities). So, my question is, in these resource-challenged times, would these Berry’s bullets be worthy for consideration, since all I’m doing is punching holes in paper? Does anybody have first hand experience with them?

I have used several for my revolvers with good results. I would expect at that velocity that those bullets have a thicker plating on them. If that is accurate, there should be no problem using them. Just make sure to do the "plunk" test in your barrel to make sure they sit correctly in your chamber. Good luck!!

Not exactly with the berrys, but I have used many thousand plated bullets from the Canadians: https://campro.ca/1001 and never had problems or complaints as long as you do not exceed their suggested velocity. I reloaded them in 357 Magnum, .40 s&w, and 10mm Auto. Fit and function was always reliable, accuracy was also good. I just switched to the fiochhi bullets because we have the best importer for the italien bullets (always available overhere) and the other brands are come and go... |
